I just finished a staging consultation with a client whose front door hardware was terribly oxidized. It was functional but unattractive – not a great first impression to give potential homebuyers. So I promised to do a bit of research and get back to her. As I pondered how to advise her best, I noticed that my own front and back door hardware were looking pretty sad. It’s a nice, heavy-duty oil-rubbed bronze set, but thanks to the Houston sun and humidity beating down on it, it just looked terrible.

What I learned is that while this tarnish and oxidation may be unsightly, it doesn’t necessarily mean the hardware is damaged. Instead, it just needed a thorough cleaning and polishing to return it to its former glory. Today we’re doing a deep dive into how to clean oil-rubbed bronze exterior door hardware.

What Is Bronze?
Bronze is one of the oldest hardware materials available. It’s made by heating a mixture of copper and tin, creating a robust and durable alloy. The late 1990s saw a surge in the popularity of bronze-finished fixtures in kitchens and bathrooms, marking a shift toward design-focused plumbing fixtures.
Similar to brass, copper, nickel, bronze fixtures usually feature a “living finish.” This means it has a natural patina that’s subject to the effects of weather, water, salt, and air. Consequently, its appearance will change over time.

What Is the Difference Between Oil-Rubbed Bronze and Regular Bronze?
Generally speaking, “oil-rubbed bronze” refers to a type of finish, not necessarily to the metal itself. An oil-rubbed bronze finish is a chemically darkened exterior designed to mimic bronze that’s naturally aged over time. Oil-rubbed bronze hardware is typically quite dark and ranges in color from a deep chocolate brown to a dark gray with copper undertones.
To create this finish, the manufacturer usually begins by plating a brass base with another material. It’s then coated with a preferred finish, often a dark oil. Gradually and with normal use, some of the oil finish will slowly erode, revealing the brass underneath. This artificial aging process gives your hardware a traditional, antique vibe that enhances the classic elegance of your home.

How to Clean an Oil-Rubbed Bronze Door Handle
Step 1
Clean fixtures and hardware with water and a soft cloth. If your fixture has hard water spotting or needs more thorough cleaning, diluted vinegar may be used sparingly. Manufacturers do not recommend using harsh chemicals, like bleach or abrasive sponges as they may cause damage to the finish. Don’t scrub unless you’re trying to speed up the aging process. I will admit – I used the fuzzy green side of a non-scratch kitchen sponge to gently tackle a few tough spots and kind of wish I hadn’t, as it removed a little more of the black finish than I would’ve liked.
Step 2
With a soft cloth or paper towel, apply a thin layer of oil and rub into the surface (it is called oil-rubbed bronze, after all). During my search, I saw everything from vegetable oil to mineral oil to baby oil to coconut oil recommended for this. I used olive oil.

Step 3
For longer-lasting results, follow up on this process by applying a non-caustic, clear paste wax in the color that best matches your hardware. Then, polish the piece with a soft cloth and a little mineral oil to restore the shine and further protect the hardware.

You can also use this method to clean an oil-rubbed bronze faucet or other hardware. Remember, the finish on all non-lacquered hardware, especially in high-traffic areas like door handles or faucet handles, will change over time regardless of the care given. This cleaning method won’t fix any pitting or heavy corrosion, but as you can see, it makes a big difference in the front door aesthetic!
