I hand-painted a gorgeous mural of a tree in my old house. It was fabulous. And when we decided to sell, I cried bitter tears as I painted over it with a boring shade of khaki an inspiring neutral color. So why did I do it? Because I was not willing to bet thousands of dollars of home sale profit on the possibility that I might find a buyer who appreciated my tree mural. What I really wanted was a quick sale and a high profit. And I knew that when selling a home, the walls should act as a backdrop, not as the focal point.
This is what a neutral color palette does. It helps home buyers from all walks of life picture themselves living in the house. It helps them emotionally connect with it and see it as their potential home.
The tricky part is finding the right neutral paint colors. Not every neutral works for every house. So where do you start?
What is the Best Neutral Color to Sell a House?
When selling a house, the best neutral color is one that appeals to the widest range of buyers while complementing the home’s architecture and design. Soft, warm tones like beige, taupe, or greige (a mix of gray and beige) are often top choices. These shades create a welcoming atmosphere while providing a versatile backdrop that allows potential buyers to envision their own furniture and décor in the space.
What Color Attracts Home Buyers? What Neutral Paint Color Is Most Popular?
Colors that attract home buyers are typically those that evoke calmness and balance. Neutral shades like soft gray, off-white, and muted earth tones are particularly popular because they are timeless and pair well with many styles. Light, airy colors can also make spaces feel larger and brighter, an attractive feature for many buyers. While bold or trendy colors may appeal to specific tastes, they can alienate others, making it safer to stick with neutrals that have broad appeal.
Should I Paint My House Neutral Before Selling?
Is your paint in bad shape with lots of dings and scratches? Are your colors dark or outdated? Do you have vivid, taste-specific paint colors? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, a fresh coat of paint in neutral colors is a smart move before selling. Neutral shades make it easier for buyers to imagine themselves living in the space, as they provide a clean and uncluttered canvas. Additionally, fresh, neutral paint can make your home feel more modern and well-maintained, which can increase its perceived value. If your current color palette includes bold or personalized hues, repainting in neutrals can help your home appeal to a wider audience and sell more quickly. This relatively small investment can yield significant returns by making your property more marketable.
How to Pick Neutral Paint Colors for Your Home Resale
1. Understand How Lighting Affects Neutral Paint Colors
First, you need to understand how light will affect the feel of your space. A room with southern exposure receives different light than a room that faces north. Even the color of your light bulbs will affect the way your paint looks.

2. Assess the Color Temperature of the Fixed Elements in Your Space
Secondly, assess the fixed elements in the home, like cabinets, tile, flooring, counters, and hardware. Is it a cooler palette (blacks, blues, grays, silvery metals, espresso-colored woods)? Or is it a warmer palette (browns, golds, natural wood tones)? The color you choose should accent these elements or you risk creating an off-balance feeling in the room.

The Best Neutral Paint Colors to Sell or Stage Your Home
I’m a big fan of the Sherwin-Williams color palette and the quality of the paint. That said, here are a few of our top picks for neutral paint colors that home buyers love:
1. Natural Linen SW9109
One of Sherwin-Williams’ most popular paint colors is Natural Linen SW 9109. Natural Linen stands out as a more contemporary choice among beige paint colors. Unlike the deep tans and warm golden beiges of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Natural Linen is toned down with a bit of gray, giving it a more flexible, modern vibe.

2. Kilim Beige SW6106
SW 6106 Kilim Beige is an especially warm color that works well in homes that have fixed elements with gold undertones. These colors are great choices if you’re trying to complement warm color tones, like golds, browns, and wood grains.

3. Agreeable Gray SW7029
Sherwin-Williams Agreeable Gray 7029 is an extremely popular, soft, light greige leans a bit more into the gray side of neutral but still brings warmth and flexibility that’s hard to beat. It’s also one of Sherwin-Williams’s top-selling paint colors year after year.

4. Repose Gray SW7015
SW 7015 Repose Gray is extremely flexible and works well in homes with black-toned or espresso-colored cabinetry and brushed nickel or stainless finishes, as well as in homes with warmer finishes.

5. Creamy SW7012
If you want a clean off-white paint color warmed up by crisp cream undertones, Sherwin-Williams Creamy 7012 may be exactly what you’re looking for. This gorgeous color is a beautiful way to warm up your walls without being too heavy or yellow.

6. Accessible Beige SW7036
Accessible Beige SW7036 is a near-neutral color that work well with both warm and cool palettes. It also has a slightly higher than average Light Reflective Value, which means it does a great job of bringing light into dark spaces.

7. Drift of Mist SW9166
Drift of Mist SW9166 is a gentle gray paint color that’s bright, breezy, and brings a touch of warmth to any space. It’s ideal for those who want the lightness of an off-white neutral but don’t want a stark gray or beige.

8. Alabaster SW7008
Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW7008 is a gorgeously soft, warm white. It has just a touch of creaminess that adds warmth without looking yellow. It’s an incredibly popular color and earned the prestigious designation of Sherwin-Williams 2016 Color of the Year.

9. Balanced Beige SW7037
Balanced Beige SW7037 is a reliable, straightforward color for many home sellers. It’s best described as a taupe with an even mixture of both brown and gray, making it flexible enough to match almost any home. It also has a fairly neutral Light Reflective Value so it doesn’t look brighter or darker on the walls than looks in the paint can. It adds more interest and dimension than the standard “builder’s beige,” but it’s still neutral enough to appeal to a wide variety of home buyers.
